Describe Your Project: This project was born out of student feedback expressing dissatisfaction with the stark, institutional ceiling in our classroom. Recognizing the impact of environment on learning and well-being, I led a redesign initiative aimed at de-stigmatizing disability, fostering a sense of belonging, and creating a visually engaging, calming space. The design incorporated principles of Trauma-Informed Design and Biophilic Design, blending faux tin border tiles with custom mural tiles to introduce texture, warmth, and natural elements. Every aspect of the project was carefully researched to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards. Bringing this vision to life required securing funding and overcoming bureaucratic hurdles. I successfully obtained a grant from the Seattle Education Foundation and built a coalition of experts and community members who provided testimonials in support of the project. Through persistence and collaboration, the redesigned ceiling became not just an aesthetic improvement, but a meaningful transformation of the learning space. The students are loving their beautiful new ceiling!
